“Saved by a Burden” poem Lord of the Flies
Saved by a Burden
By Leeya smith
L oyal tribe of one splits into two,
O bstinance thrives among these groups.
R ational cooperation will lead to a happy end,
D iabolical mindsets will turn them instead.
O mnipotence is what is desired
F uture existence is based on their survival
T he forest of darkness holds the beast of their fright.
H elpless Simon crawls out of the night,
E nabled by Jack, he loses the fight.
F or after Piggy with glasses of fire has passed,
L eft, was only one group still intact.
I n the end a plane caught sight of the smokey hunt.
E lated they were when life was finally certain,
S aved at last but from the expense of a burden.
The end of the novel contains lots of horrific imagery and events. Piggy and Simon both die tragic deaths and the ironic part was in trying to kill Ralph in the same way Ralph wanted to try to get them saved, they got rescued. In my poem, my goal was to acknowledge all of the pain and suffering they went through leading up to their last day on the island. The diversion of power is what caused the tension to proceed to grow between Ralph and Jack. At the end of it all, the place they once learned to survive in was burnt down and some of the most caring people were dead. The burden I refer to isn’t just one tragic moment in the novel, but instead all of the savage and non human actions the characters experienced throughout the Lord of the Flies.
